VERDICT · RELIABLE IF THE BELT INTERVAL IS RESPECTED

Acura 3.5L J35 V6
is it actually reliable?

The V6 behind the TL and MDX — fundamentally sound, with reliability that hinges almost entirely on one maintenance item owners sometimes overlook.

The short version

Unlike the K24, this V6 uses a timing belt rather than a chain — and unlike a typical interference-free design, a snapped belt here causes serious internal damage. Respected on schedule, it's a genuinely strong, smooth engine. Versions with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM), which deactivates cylinders under light load, carry a secondary, well-documented complaint about rough transitions between modes.

Pros and cons

WHAT HOLDS UP

  • Smooth, refined power delivery typical of Honda/Acura V6 engineering
  • Strong bottom-end durability when properly maintained
  • Shared platform across multiple models keeps parts costs reasonable
  • VCM versions offer a genuine fuel economy benefit when functioning correctly

WHAT FAILS

  • Timing belt is an interference design — a snapped or skipped belt causes major engine damage
  • VCM (where fitted) can cause a noticeable shudder when switching between cylinder modes
  • Oil leaks from various gaskets become more common with age and mileage
  • Torque converter shudder is sometimes reported, more a transmission than engine symptom

Where problems tend to appear

Not a guarantee, but a pattern seen consistently across owner forums and independent-garage reporting.

Per manufacturer interval

Timing belt and water pump service — the single most important maintenance item on this engine, non-negotiable.

100,000–150,000 KM

VCM shudder complaints, where fitted, most commonly surface in this range.

150,000+ KM

Oil leaks from valve cover or cam seals become more common but rarely urgent.

Buying one — what to check

This is the defining check on any J35: get documented proof of the timing belt interval, and if there's any doubt at all, budget for immediate replacement rather than taking a chance.

On VCM-equipped versions, feel for a shudder during light throttle cruising, the classic symptom of a VCM-related complaint.

A persistent oil leak is rarely urgent on this engine but worth factoring into your offer.
